Excelixis – GNU/Linux Distro

Change of plans

Posted in Uncategorized by cyberpython on March 18, 2009

Due to problems I’ve been experiencing with Ubuntu Intrepid and several applications/libraries I decided to stick with the current version of Excelixis until the next LTS release.

If there are some of you that want to upgrade to 8.10 (after all Excelixis 1.0 is just a more fancy Xubuntu 8.04), you can always use the Update Manager tool (though I cannot guarantee the results) – if you do so, please remember to disable all the third-party software repositories before upgrading.

Excelixis v1.5 : First screenshot

As you may already know, the poll about which flavour of Ubuntu should Excelixis v1.5 be based on is closed and the winner is Ubuntu (Gnome – based). Today I set up an Ubuntu Intrepid virtual machine and started the customization – so, here is a screenshot of the upcomg Excelixis v1.5 desktop:

What is your preferred desktop environment?

When I decided to create Excelixis I had to choose the desktop environment it would use (and as a consequence the flavor of Ubuntu it would be based on). I chose Xubuntu because of XFWM and its stable compositing feature, but now Metacity has also matured and compositing is stable enough.
Also, one of the major drawbacks of Excelixis v1.0 (according to the e-mails I have received) is that it does not use Gnome. So, here is the question:

Distro renamed!

Posted in Uncategorized by cyberpython on September 22, 2008

The distribution has been renamed to ‘Excelixis’ – which means evolution in Greek.

There are no other changes (except for the name and some artwork) – this is still the same version(1.0).

A new version (possibly tagged as 1.5) will be released few weeks after the release of Ubuntu/Xubuntu 8.10.

Thanks for using Excelixis!!!

(Updated screenshots will be uploaded soon – though they won’t differ that much from the previous ones.)
